The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has assured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment to building a robust and efficient transport system following the commissioning of 100 new buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited in Accra.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2026, the Minister described transportation as a critical pillar for economic growth, stressing that a functioning economy depends on a reliable transport system capable of operating day and night.

“Any economy that functions well must have a transport system that is robust enough to deliver services effectively and ensure that people can move safely to their destinations,” he said.

According to the minister, the addition of the new buses would improve connectivity for workers, traders, students, and commuters across the country.

“These buses will connect people to their workplaces, markets, schools, and wherever they need to go safely,” he stated.

Mr. Nikpe praised the management and staff of Metro Mass Transit for their efforts in reviving the state-owned transport company, noting that the company was gradually overcoming previous operational and financial difficulties.

“With the support and encouragement of President John Dramani Mahama and the visit of the Vice President today, Metro Mass is no longer struggling as before. We are growing because we are now able to take care of ourselves,” he said.

He commended engineers, mechanics, and workshop staff for working tirelessly during difficult periods, especially during festive seasons when commuters and students were stranded due to inadequate transport services.

He noted that the successful deployment of the first 100 buses would pave the way for the delivery of the remaining 200 buses under the broader fleet expansion programme.

Mr. Nikpe also disclosed that other transport agencies under the Ministry of Transport, including the Intercity STC Coaches Limited and agencies responsible for intra-city transport, were undergoing reforms and would soon receive new buses and equipment.

Beyond road transport, he said the government was also investing in the rail, maritime, and aviation sectors as part of a broader agenda to modernize Ghana’s transport infrastructure.

“This is the only way we can truly serve the people of Ghana and support the vision of President Mahama for a well-run economy,” he added.

The Minister, however, challenged Metro Mass Transit to improve its internal operations and financial sustainability so the company could eventually expand its fleet through internally generated funds rather than relying solely on government intervention.

“We want to see a situation where Metro Mass can use its own resources to acquire more buses in the future,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by the Vice President, government officials, transport stakeholders, and staff of Metro Mass Transit.
