A parent of one of the 8 students dismissed from the Chiana Senior High School for insulting President Akufo-Addo is pleading with the GES to “temper justice with mercy.”

He says in as much as the young girls erred in their utterances which they outrightly condemned, they have shown remorse for their deeds and must be considered on the punishment meted out to them.

Some 8 students, all female, from the Chiana SHS in the Kassena-Nankana West district of the Upper East region were captured in a viral video raining insults on President Akufo-Addo with unprintable words which has since been condemned by many.

After investigating the incident which occurred in November 2022, the GES resolved to dismiss the culprits from the school, denying them the opportunity to be admitted by any government institution to further their education.

The parent who spoke on condition of anonymity on TV3 Midday Live Thursday, January 12, 2023, said their wards were traumatized when the video got out because their intention was not to put it out in public.

He said the video was only meant to be a joke which was unfortunately recorded by someone without the knowledge of the girls.

“…We should temper justice with mercy and not throw them out to the wolves. Actually, when the incident occured and we spoke to our daughter she said they were only joking.  Their intent was not to throw out [the video] into the media.

“They didn’t know one of them was secretly recording and unfortunately the video leaked. You could see from their reactions that they themselves were shocked that it leaked.

“What it means is that they were joking, youthful exuberance or something and unfortunate on their part one of them recorded and released the video out there,” a parent shared.

Speaking on the next step they will be taking as parents, he said letters might have been distributed to all other public schools not to admit the girls even though he is not so sure if that is the modus operandi of the GES in such instances.

“I’m not abreast with GES policies on dismissals but I want to believe that when a student is dismissed, they make copies of the letters to other schools so that such a student will not gain admission into any other public school and that is where the worry is as a parent,” the worried parent relayed.
