Former General Captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has expressed regrets joining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a member of the 2024 Manifesto Sub-Committee, conceding he was used for votes.

Gyan was made Chairman of the Youth and Sports Sub-Committee of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 Manifesto Team.

He was also spotted at the launch of the Manifesto at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) prior to the elections, which the NPP lost.

He said the move has cost him, at least, respect from certain class of people.

“Even if it were NDC who came for me, I know it’s for the people,” he began in an Instagram Live chat on Thursday, January 3.

“For me the 99% can be politics but my 1% is for the people. I was helping the youth. When I was on my own, I did many things myself without any sponsorship.

“So, if I have had this bigger capacity like government, it was going to save me my personal purse.

“I will use the government funds to help. I won’t put it down because even that from my own pocket, I use it to help.

“That is why I decided to join NPP. Not knowing they were using my popularity because things were hard in the country and people were upset. So, they want[ed] to use my popularity because I have a lot of fans in Ghana and so when I am now in this political party, automatically all the fans will go there. Strategically! And that was how I was used.”

He said by this move, he lost his respect with some people, raining curses on those who were behind this.

“And that thing God is not going to forgive anybody who is involved.”

The former Liberty Professionals attacker also took a dig at his time with the Black Stars, narrating how some young players were “brainwashed” to stay away from him a few days after joining camp.

He shared how these players will be all over him, calling their families to talk to him but will suddenly avoid meeting him even on the corridors in their hotels because they had been fed with negative stuff about him.
