President John Mahama has pledged his government’s commitment to catering for the needs of children and the elderly in the country.
According to him, it is the duty of the government to ensure that children and the elderly are well catered for.
“The dignity of older people is the dignity of our nation and we must protect it. The soul of any nation can be seen in how it treats its children and its senior citizens,” he said during a luncheon with senior citizens on July 1 as part of activities marking Republic Day.
“Ghana cannot thrive unless every citizen can live in dignity and aspire to a better future,” he added.
President Mahama underscored the importance of honouring senior citizens.
“As we honour our senior citizens today, we affirm a simple truth. Nations grow stronger when they listen and respect their elders. You our senior citizens carry within you the lessons of history, the memory of sacrifice, the clarity of hindsight. You know where we’ve come from, you’ve seen our highest moments and you’ve witnessed our most difficult trials. Your wisdom is a resource we cannot ignore,” he noted.
He called on the youth and “our policy makers, our institutions to learn from you, to tap into your experience and follow your guidance. Let us build bridges between the generations. Let the young dream and let the old advise and guide. This is the formula for lasting progress.
President Mahama urged Ghanaians to “use this Republic Day to renew our pledge to be loyal citizens, kind neighbours, diligent workers and guardians of the dear nation Ghana we love.”
“Let us commit to peace and not provocation, to truth and not deception, to justice and not favoritism,” he charged.
