The Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Iddie Adams, has said the Parliament he does not dream of being a member of, is the current one Ghana is having.
He says the Parliament he read about and dreamt to be a part of, is the absolute opposite of what is in existence now.
His comments stem from a statement from the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, on the floor of Parliament accusing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of polluting more water bodies than the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The House, on Day One of its two-day emergency sitting Tuesday, September 03, 2024, was discussing the illegal mining problem which has been on the rise as the devastation on water bodies has intensified.
During the debate, the House deliberated on how the problem is affecting the country with successive government’s failing to tackle the matter.
The blame game syndrome took centre stage when Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said that the opposition NDC supervised more destruction of water bodies than the NPP.
“If we are to look and investigate both sides of the House (NPP and NDC), I can tell you that the NDC polluted the water more than us. So let’s get matters straight,” he said.
Reacting to the issue on the KeyPoints Saturday, September 07, 2024, Kofi Adams stated that “many of us were disappointed and we stood up to draw Mr. Speaker’s attention that we needed to make a contribution because this is not the Parliament I want to be in, this is not the Parliament I joined and this is not the Parliament I read about and this is not what I expect from Members of Parliament who belong to the ruling party”
He explained that it is wrong for the NPP to suggest that doing the lesser of an evil activity is better than someone whom you presume did more, if the Annoh-Dompreh’s assertion was even true.
“Whilst not admitting his statement that, that is what is was, it is absolutely wrong to suggest that because someone did something that was wrong, you are right if you also repeated it, but possibly, in your mind, at the lower level.
“The issue of polluting waters especially when you are dealing with turbidity levels, if you say lawyer martin Kpebu polluted this bottle of water and increased the turbidity level to 1,800, the 1,800 could still possibly be processed. It may not have done total destruction to the water. Then you come and say lawyer martin Kpebu added 1,800 and I have added just 1,500, your 1,500 that you’ve added has lifted the levels from 1,800 which was manageable to a level that can no longer be managed. So, maybe, you may have added less, but your addition is what has made this water useless,” he explained.
