The attack on Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea has opened conversation on security for Ghanaian football clubs as it comes on the back of other similar attacks in recent years.

The incident involving Berekum Chelsea comes after similar incidents involved some top clubs.

Legon Cities FC attacked on Bibiani-Kumasi highway – November 2, 2023

On November 2, 2023, Legon Cities FC’s team bus was attacked by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Kumasi highway while returning to Accra from a Ghana Premier League match. The robbers made away with their phones and laptops and cash from players and officials.

According to victims’ accounts, the team was forced to lie on the ground at gunpoint while the robbers carried out their operation. They returned safely but highlighted security failures near a police checkpoint.

AshantiGold attacked – March 2022

In March 2022, the AshantiGold SC team bus was attacked by armed robbers while returning to Obuasi from an Accra game. The incident occurred at Assin Endwa with the robbers firing shots at the windscreen. No injuries nor fatalities were reported among the players and staff.

Asokwa Deportivo armed robbery attack – April 14, 2019

On April 14, 2019, players and officials of Ghanaian Division One League side Asokwa Deportivo FC were attacked by armed robbers while traveling to play a match in Prestea. No one was hurt in the attack around Jacobu.

Berekum Chelsea attacked on Bibiani-Goaso road – April 12, 2026

The latest attack resulted in the death of a promising footballer, Dominic Frimpong. After the robbers opened fire on the team bus, the players ran for their lives. Unfortunately, Dominic was hit by a bullet in the head and had to be rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
