The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has asked President Akufo-Addo to rescue the Cedi to relieve Ghanaians from the hardship his mismanagement of the economy has subjected them into.

He says the President’s deeds amid the economic turmoil shows he does not care about the hardship of Ghanaians.

Mr. Suhuyini said this in relation to government’s attribution of the Cedi’s depreciation to external factors –COVID-19 and Russia Ukraine war –rather than adopting better policies to stabilize the currency and the economy as a whole.

Speaking on TV3 Newday Tuesday, October 18, 2022, he said other countries suffered the impact of the two external shocks but have been able to revive their economies whereas the Akufo-Addo government is still crying foul.

“You have countries that are doing much much better than you even though they also experienced Covid. You have countries that are doing much much better than you even though Ukraine is closer to them than you. Your currency for God sake is the worse in the world. That should tell you that other currencies are doing better than you even though they operate in the same international market and you are not ashamed to refer to external factors as reasons why you are last. Don’t justify your inability to stabilize the Cedi and make it strong with time. Time has nothing to do with your incompetence,” he lamented.

He added that due to economic mismanagement of the government, businesses will now have to spend more than before in order to thrive.

“If the value of goods you use getting in the beginning of the year were 100,000, you will now need 160,000 to get the same value of goods. Let’s empathize with people in such businesses and not disregard the suffering that we have put them into. Such a person who now requires 60,000 more to add to his 100,000 to still get the same goods for his shop, may have to close the shop down. And if people were working they may have to lay them off. They are the people the president is saying he doesn’t care whether they vote for the NPP or not,” he stated.

He noted the NPP has no clue in the management of the economy.

“It is now very clear that they have no clue, they have no solution. The businessmen who try to create jobs and keep the economy running are frustrated on where the country is going to. I feel sorry that this government wasted the goodwill that they inherited. I don’t think any government in the history of the Fourth Republic have ever had the kind of goodwill that they came to office with,” he bemoaned.

He also said the Mahama-NDC led administration and previous governments have performed better only for the NPP to come and misuse state resources.

“If they did like we did we wouldn’t have been where we are today but they came like the child who inherits so much from the parents without knowing the hard work that the parents put in raising those assets, decided to go to town to throw parties like the kenkey parties, to celebrate and to throw money at anything that was on sight without first considering the impact on the investments of the parents,” he reiterated.
