A task force against illegal mining in the Ashanti Region has arrested three persons who were reportedly mining in the Amadaa Community of the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The task force was set up by the Paramount Chief of Toase Traditional Area, Nana Yim Awere Ababio, to flush out people engaged in illegal mining upstream of the Amadaa river and forest.
In an interaction with Onua News, the Mawerehene of Toase, Nana Kontembratem Kusi Appiah explained that the miners were busily perpetuating the illegality in the forest and river when the task force embarked on the clampdown.
According to him, three of the illegal miners were arrested whilst others managed to fled to the bush.
Nana Kusi Appiah noted that the three alleged illegal miners, after their arrest, have been handed over to the police for onward processing.
He stated that during the operation, the task force seized some mining equipment and motorbikes.
He also said the Toase Traditional Council “will not tolerate any illegal mining activity, whether in river Amadaa or any other location on our land.”
He blamed Mineral Commission for giving license to unknown peoples to mine in a communities without the approval of the chiefs.
“Mineral Commission is causing all destruction in the country,” he stated.
