For several decades since the establishment of St. Clement Primary School in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, pupils practiced open defecation at every available space in th school and within the Daportindongo community.

This is due to lack of decent toilet facilities in the school which was established on October 2, 1962.

The institution has served as a beacon of knowledge, discipline, and moral upbringing for generations of children and has produced respected personalities occupying important positions in both the public and private sectors in Ghana and across the world.

To address the issue of open defecation in the school among many challenges, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has constructed a toilet facility for pupils and teachers with a special girls’ changing chamber as part of promoting hygiene among the girlchild.

The new toilet facility

The toilet facility was handed over to the school during the speech and prize giving day organized by the school to award and appreciate the efforts and contributions of pupils and staff.

The headmistress of the school, Madam Cecilia Aboyer who was full of joy and appreciation, thanked the PTA for coming to their aid to promote good hygiene and sanitation with the provision of the toilet facility which she said will further strengthen academic activities.

“All the success and goodwill we have achieved as a school, could not have happened without your support and funding as PTA. Therefore, we shall appeal to you (PTA) for continued financial commitment to bring these ideas of projects to reality”, she said.

Madam Cecilia Aboyer disclosed that, the school will embark on a project to establish an information communication Technology (ICT) lab to facilitate the training of the children.

Urinals

The Senior Boys’ Prefect of St. Clement Primary School, Abasewunge Lawrence reiterated the need for the school to have a modern ICT lab to help keep them abreast with modern technology.

The PTA Chairman of the school, Zakaria Nsoh, outlined many developmental projects they will be embarking to give the school a full facelift, including a fence.

Due to the lack of a fence wall, a lot of pupils of St. Clement Primary School have been hit by reckless motor riders on the premises.

The school is situated along a busy street linking different routes to the Bolgatanga business district.

School authorities are also worried about the increasing encroachment by residents in building on the school’s lands and have called for the immediate construction of the fence wall.
