The United Party (UP) has congratulated the Ghana Black Princesses for their qualification to the 2026 FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup to be hosted in Poland this September.

The young ladies secured qualification to the World Cup after a 1:1 draw with Uganda, following a first leg match that saw the Princesses annexing their opponents by 2 goals to 1.

In a statement issued by the Director of Communications for the UP, Solomon Owusu, on Sunday, May 10, 2026, the party congratulated the “coaching staff, playing body and the management” of the team for the qualification.

“The United Party could not be proud in our girls the more after a difficult first leg played at the Accra Sports Stadium which ended 2:1 in Favour of the Black Princess,” the statement said.

It further lauded the team for its courage and determination in attaining the feat outside their home soil, a laurel the Party says “establishes a Can-Do spirit template for our country.”

“As a political party that seeks to invest heavily in Sports especially women football, we could not allow this achievement by our sisters and daughters to go unnoticed,” the statement added.

The Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen-led United Party urged the government to avoid discrimination in its support for the national teams where the Black Stars are always prioritised above the others.

“The UP urges the government to offer equal attention to women football especially when it comes to the national teams as is done to the Black Stars.”

The Black Princesses went into the match with a 2-1 win in the 1st leg and needed to avoid defeat to progress to the World Cup scheduled for Poland in September.

Uganda took the lead in the 6th minute through Sylvia Kabene and held on for 78 minutes, but Ghana staged a massive comeback despite going down to ten players following the sending off of Margaret Yeboah in the 68th minute.

Ghana came back stronger in the second half introducing fresh legs. Sarah Nyarko and Priscilla Mensah replaced Ivy Osei Owusu and Agnes Yeboah.

With 12 minutes left on the clock, Linda Owusu Ansah scored a trademark goal as she fired home from a corner kick to level matters for Ghana.

The Princesses then kept their composure and held on to pick a vital away draw to win the contest 3-2 on aggregate after a 2-1 win in Accra.

The result sends Ghana to their 8th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following appearances in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024.
