The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to building stronger international and domestic partnerships grounded in transparency, fairness, and national interest.

Speaking on the country’s forward-looking agenda during the 2026 Sunon Asolgli China New Year Celebration in Tema, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang declared that “Ghana approaches the future determined to deepen our cooperation that is transparent, fair and aligned with our development priorities.”

On Monday February 16, 2026, the Vice President joined management and staff of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited to commemorate the Chinese New Year, underscoring the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and China.

The event, held at the company’s power plant, brought together government officials, members of the Chinese community in Ghana, and industry stakeholders to celebrate the Lunar New Year while reaffirming the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

Professor Naana Jane praised Sunon Asogli for its significant contribution to Ghana’s energy sector and economic development. She noted that the company stands as a symbol of successful Ghana–China cooperation, creating jobs for Ghanaians and supporting the country’s industrial growth.

“Today’s celebration reminds us that development is not only built by infrastructure, but also by people, cultures and mutual respect.’’

She highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, trade, and technology.

“This is a relationship with history shaped by diplomacy, trade, technical cooperation and the everyday interactions of people who live and work side by side, today, that history places a responsibility on both sides,’’ Prof Opoku Agyemang said.

Management of Sunon Asogli expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for its continued support and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering reliable power supply to boost national development.

Co-Founder of Sunon Asogli Power Limited, Togbe Afede XIV said the company has signed an MOU with new Chinese partners for a petroleum sector project and plans to start supplying power to Burkina-Faso by March 2026.

“With the support of the Government of Ghana, we will start delivering power to Burkina Faso in March 2026,” he said.

He said the company is encouraged by the stability of the economy and emphasized the need for government support to grow the energy sector and transition to renewable energy, noting the company is working on various projects, including solar and wind farms, to diversify the country’s energy mix.

“We have acquired 4 sites in the North for the development of solar power projects with an initial target of 200 megawatts. We are also working on 100 to 200 megawatts wind farm in the Sege area of the Ada West District. We want to be an integral part of Ghana’s economic success, supporting the big push, the 24-hour economy, another very exciting programmes and initiatives of your government.’’ He said.

The colourful celebration featured traditional Chinese performances, cultural displays, and exchanges of goodwill messages, reflecting the deepening people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The event not only marked the beginning of a new lunar year but also reinforced the enduring friendship and cooperation between Ghana and China.
