The Volta River Authority (VRA) has revealed that it has suspended exporting power to Ghana’s neighboring countries.
These countries include Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso.
The suspension is on the back of a directive by President Akufo-Addo in April 2024, when some parts of the country was experiencing erratic power supply.
The directive which was revealed by the Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, Samuel Atta-Akyea indicated the President’s prioritisation of domestic energy requirements over potential profits from exporting electricity.
Director of Water Resources and Renewable Energy, at the VRA, Engr Abdul Wahab says though it is a major revenue loss to the state, the directive has been carried out, since May.
“We are a state agency, and so we are obliged to comply with these directives, and we have done that, since May. It will be a major revenue loss to the country, but we are hopeful of donor support and funding to make up for the loss” he revealed.
Regarding the Authority’s preparation for the rainy season, Engr Wahab says there will not be a likelihood of spillage, as the dam and its areas are not experiencing enough rainfall as experienced in other parts of the country.
