The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said it has not been able to release the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to financial challenges.
The Council says it has not been able to defray the debts it owe the technicians responsible for maintaining critical equipment needed for the examination process.
John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, has indicated that although the challenges were highlighted earlier, they still persist since they have not been able to acquire the necessary funds to get them resolved.
“The results are not ready. We issued a statement earlier highlighting some of the challenges we are currently facing. Unfortunately, these challenges persist because we have not been able to secure the necessary funds to address them,” he said in an interview on Citi FM Thursday, December 19, 2024.
Kapi disclosed that the scanners used to mark the multiple choice questions in the WASSCE are currently not functioning contributing to a major part of their challenges.
The scanners, he continued, play a vital role in the grading process, reemphasising the need for them to be repaired urgently.
However, technicians tasked with repairing the equipment have suspended their services due to an outstanding debt of GH₵25 million owed to them by WAEC.
“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH¢25 million and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments. Private schools pay their fees but the government pays for candidates in public schools, and so until the monies are paid, we are unable to release the results,” Mr. Kapi elaborated.
Earlier, the Minority in Parliament requested that the Finance and Education Ministers be summoned to Parliament to address the government’s indebtedness to WAEC.
