The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has explained that Morocco only came in to assist the sport-governing body on the continent to host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
According to him, many countries offered to host while there are many, still, who want to host.
“Some countries want to host but they want to change the dates,” he stated at a press conference held after an Executive Committee Meeting on Friday, February 13.
He was answering a question on reports that a new host has been selected for the tournament, which begins on Tuesday, March 17 to Friday, April 3.
He insisted that “the WAFCON continues”, adding that a change in the period of the tournament would affect CAF’s calendar on tournaments, especially as the World Cup takes place not long afterwards.
Dr Motsepe was, however, not definite in mentioning Morocco as hosts.
The reports of the withdrawal of Morocco as hosts were fuelled by an announcement by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, that they are the new hosts.
This was, however, later denied by South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, who insisted “no formal decision has been taken to relocate the tournament and Morocco remains the officially designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations”.
