UPP’s Akwasi Addai Odike has said “we are becoming fools in our own country.”

The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party thinks the manner with which Ghana’s natural resources are being depleted without the country gaining anything out of it is near to foolishness.

Speaking on Onua TV’s Maakye Monday, September 12, 2021, Odike bemoaned the rate at which Chinese and Indians smuggle over $16 billion worth of gold out of the country annually, causing the Cedi to depreciate aside from the devastating repercussions on their illicit acts on the environment.

He tells Captain Smart, host of Maakye a company like Newmont makes over a billion dollar annually from mining whilst Ahafo Kenyasi, the land on which they make their wealth look impoverished.

Part of the immediate effects of galamsey he revealed is a petition to the United Nations by Ivory Coast to ask the World Bank to blacklist Ghana from its borrowers because of how their river bodies sourcing from Ghana are being polluted.
