President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has admonished his appointees at the Municipal and District levels to double up their efforts to help him fight the galamsey menace in the country.

He says a win against galamsey can aid their dream of breaking the 8 in the 2024 polls.

The President, who was addressing some MMDCEs after a meeting with the National House of chiefs at Manhyia, the Asantehene’s Palace, said curbing the issue of galamsey is dear to him and he will not relent on his efforts towards it.

Despite the canker costing him votes in the last elections, the president says he is bent on winning the fight and that requires the effort of his appointees at the local levels.

“We all know how it cost us in the last election especially the Western Region (Tarkwa) and other mining communities. Our win in the galamsey fight can help us break the 8 and I want us to join efforts to achieve this feat,” he admonished.

Meanwhile, he has pledged not to shield any Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) who is engaging in illegal mining activities popularly known as ‘galamsey’.

“You are my representatives in the various metropolitan municipal and district assembles and it cannot be that the president is raising a war against galamsey at the national level and you, the president’s representatives will be the ones compromising it,” he said.

The president was in Kumasi to address his appointees and the traditional authority to address certain issues affecting the region, especially the rising rate of galamsey.
