Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a nominee for the Supreme Court, has said the Judiciary cannot gag journalists in line of their duty.

He says journalists play a critical role in shaping public opinion about the role of the Judiciary. According to Dzamefe, journalists should rather prioritise clarity when reporting on judicial matters rather than relying on perceptions.

During his vetting by the Appointment’s Committee Monday, June 16, 2025, the judge acknowledged the media’s right to scrutinise the courts but urged that they apply fairness and truthfulness in their reportage.

He explained that “the press can come and cover our work. As the Judiciary, we are not sacrosanct. So we are not against journalists covering our work. We can’t gag the journalists.”

He expressed concerns over the misreporting of court proceedings, which he says has become frequent, warning that such inaccuracies could undermine the public’s trust in the justice system.

Justice Dzamefe, however, expressed concern over the frequent misreporting of court proceedings, warning that such inaccuracies could undermine public trust in the justice system.

“All we are asking is that journalists report the truth. We don’t have the power to stop them, but we should make sure their reportage is the truth and is fair,” he added.

He encouraged media professionals to seek clarification whenever necessary to ensure accurate reporting.

“As much as possible, do follow-ups and ask if they don’t understand anything,” he advised.

Justice Dzamefe’s remarks add to ongoing conversations around judicial transparency, media responsibility, and the need for collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s justice system.
