A member of the newly inaugurated Constitution Review Committee (CRIC), Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, has indicated that they have nearly a year and a half to complete the exercise.
According to him, their task is mainly to carry forward and give implementation force to the government position paper on the report of the Constitution Review Committee chaired by H Kwasi Prempeh.
Dr Akumperigya said this during an interview with Keminni Amanor on Ghana Tonight on August 28.
“We have about sixteen months to deliver on our mandate, that is, from now until when we will have referenda,” he disclosed.
The Committee Member clarified that their work will not result in a new constitution for the country.
“Our work is not to produce a new constitution. It will still be the same 1992 Constitution with modifications,” he stated.
Dr Akumpergya is part of the 11-member committee inaugurated by the on Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, on August 28, to advance proposals made for a review of the 1992 Constitution.

“This follows the announcement of government’s position paper on the recommendations made by the Professor H. Kwesi Prempeh Constitution Review Committee set up by His Excellency the President last year,” the statement indicated.
It said the Committee is Chaired by Presidential Legal Counsel and Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew.

According to the statement, “The Committee is tasked with examining the government’s position paper alongside the report of the Constitution Review Committee and developing a comprehensive framework for the implementation of these proposals.”
Government reiterated “its commitment to an inclusive and transparent constitutional review process that reflects the aspirations of the Ghanaian people and strengthens our democratic governance.”
