Although not an expert in energy, a former UN Advisor on Governance, Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has said it is obvious that the ongoing power crisis is as a result of lack of funds.

He says what he has learnt from experts in the field is that the state lacks the funds to purchase fuel to power its plants to produce the needed energy for power.

But, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, it common knowledge that Ghana is broke, following how successive administrations have mismanaged state resources.

The current financial state of the nation, per the Professor’s assertion, justify the experts’ concern about the energy crisis coming as a result of the government’s inability to fund the operation of the power plants.

“It’s true that the government has been unable to address the matter as quickly as we want, the experts say the problem is lack of funds to procure the needed fuel to power the engines and we also know that the government to a large extent is broke,” he told  Alfred Ocansey on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Monday, April 22, 2024.

“We know what is going on in Washington currently what the Finance Minister is negotiating with the IMF to get some US$360million to get some kind of quick relief. We are in a real financial crunch. In this situation, how can you hide? you cannot because everything has been exposed,” he added.

The co-founder of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) said he could not fathom why the government is not being transparent with Ghanaians over the matter.

He says admitting to the challenge and opening up with the citizenry is not anything suicidal, the reason he is surprised the current administration is concealing the truth from the people.

His comments follow the ongoing power crisis which is also known ‘dumsor‘, that has crippled many business and put many homes in darkness for some months now.

“I don’t see what is suicidal about being transparent with your people and I don’t think we should colour every situation in the country with politics. If we do that, then we are doing ourselves a great disservice. Facts are facts,” he said.
