The Ghana Association for Savings and Loans Companies (GHASALC) is advocating the development of local internet protocols.

The Association says such will avert the situation where companies in Ghana secure and source internet from international companies which in effect affects their operations whenever there is a global challenge on internet.

The Executive Secretary, Tweneboah Koduah, made the call on Onua FM‘s M’dwuma Mpuntuo, hosted by Nana Yaw Opare on Monday, March 25.

Mr. Koduah was reacting to the impact on the recent internet disruptions on savings and loans.

The global disruption of the internet affected most businesses in the country.

The Executive Secretary said “we work with every sector. We work with individuals, businesses, formal sector workers and informal sector workers”.

“We have about seven million customers in all the 16 regions, and we have 26 savings and loans dotted across the country”, he added.

Mr. Koduah said, “we needed to serve all our customers well in all these regions and so we have to use internet for work”.

“In the olden days, we used to write letters, but in the modern era, we use emails and internet is very crucial.”

He said, “when the disruptions occurred, some of our institutions were unable to put on their internet which affected us”.

“Some were processing loans for customers at the time the internet went off. We could not give out their monies. We could not service our customers in other regions. We could not transfer money. We could not process cheques. We could not open the accounts. It was like a test to us.”

Mr. Koduah said “we had a process to serve our customers but not that internet is expensive in Ghana so we need our localized internet so that if there is anything like this internationally, we can do it our own”.
