Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, is calling on the US government to lift the sanctions it has placed on Cuba.

He has expressed Ghana’s solidarity with the Cuban government for the sanctions, describing the development as “unfair”.

Speaking at the presentation of letters of credentials from 5 newly appointed envoys to serve as Ambassadors in Ghana, Wednesday, March 12, 2025, John Mahama expressed Ghana’s support for Cuba in the midst of the blockade and asked that something be done about it.

According to him, the two countries need to revert to its previous relationship where citizens of each could travel freely to the other.

“On the international arena, we stand by Cuba, that the blockade against Cuba must be lifted. It is unfair for a country like America to continue to blockade a small island nation like Cuba for so many years.

“We believe that the blockade should be lifted so that people can travel freely between Cuba and America and that relations between Cuba and America can be put back on a normal track,” pleaded John Mahama.

He says it is regrettable that President Obama began the process but couldn’t stand the test of time, expressing hope that the ban will be lifted for the people of Cuba to be relieved.

“We were very hopeful when President Obama started the process of lifting the blockade but unfortunately, it was blockade again so we will continue to advocate for that to be lifted because it creates quite a lot of difficulty and suffering for the Cuban people,” he added.

The 5 envoys who presented their Letters of Credence to President Mahama at the seat of government include Laura Ranalli, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy, Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba and Musu Jatu Ruhle, Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia.
