Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, is calling on the main actors in the Russian-Ukraine war to ceasefire.
He says it is time to end the age-long war which has led to the lost of many lives, including children.
Speaking at the presentation of letters of credentials from 5 newly appointed envoys to serve as Ambassadors in Ghana on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, John Mahama said it was time for the issue to be resolved, adding that it can only be done only when the war has abated.
“The issue of Russia and Ukraine can be resolved. We think that a lot of young people have died it’s time for the war to stop and we can only stop it if there is a ceasefire and some kind of dialogue begins,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin says it is examining the US ceasefire proposal which has been agreed to by Ukraine. But Russia’s Vladimir Putin has previously said he is not interested in a temporary truce and would rather have a full stop according to an Al Jazeera report.
This follows the talks in Jeddah, adding that it is waiting for a briefing from US on the proposal that calls for a halt to all the fighting on land, sea and in the air.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says if Russia rejects the proposal, “it’ll tell us a lot about what their goals are and what their mindset is”.
The US has agreed to resume military aid and intelligence sharing after Ukraine said it was ready to support the ceasefire proposal.
A Russian missile attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih has killed a 47-year-old woman and wounded at least nine other people, local officials say according to latest reports.
The 5 envoys who presented their Letters of Credence to President Mahama at the seat of government include Laura Ranalli, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy, Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba and Musu Jatu Ruhle, Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia.

The rest are Dr. Abdulla Muraid Sulaiman Mohammed Al Mandoos, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates and Ali Ghomshi, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
