The Ghana Police Service has recorded major breakthroughs in its ongoing nationwide crackdown on organized crime, dismantling several high-profile robbery syndicates, recovering illegal weapons, and apprehending wanted suspects.
Speaking at a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters on September 7, 2026, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno highlighted seven major operational successes following weeks of intelligence-led operations across the Western, Northern, Savannah, and Greater Accra regions.
“My team and I remain committed to taking the fight to the criminals and making life uncomfortable for criminal syndicates,” IGP Yohuno declared, reaffirming the Police Service’s resolve to safeguard life and property nationwide.
Extradition in Couple’s Murder
In a key update, the Police announced the arrest and deportation of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.
According to police investigations, Awundok—who worked as an errand boy for the couple—murdered them before stealing their mobile phones, cash, and private vehicle. He subsequently fled Ghana for the United Arab Emirates. Following an INTERPOL Red Notice, Awundok was apprehended in Dubai and deported back to Ghana on August 30, 2026, by a joint team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL. The suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation and remains in lawful custody while their mortal remains are undergoing autopsy at the Police Hospital Morgue.
Foiled Bank Heists and Targeted Attacks in Accra-Tema
The Police Service also detailed how intelligence officers foiled planned attacks on several banking institutions in the Greater Accra Metropolis and Tema.
Operating in vehicles with fake or swapped Ghanaian registration numbers, a syndicate had been targeting bank customers, including a victim who was robbed of GH₵50,000 in Tema Community 2. On August 13, 2026, police surveillance units intercepted the syndicate at Labone while they were positioning themselves to launch an attack between Zenith, GCB, and Ecobank branches. During the swift intervention, two suspects were killed, one was arrested, and another escaped. Officers recovered a Blow F90 pistol along with 13 different vehicle registration plates. The arrested suspect, 49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has since been remanded.
Dismantling Mining Enclave Syndicates
Between August and early September 2026, intelligence operations successfully dismantled a dangerous gang targeting gold dealers’ shops, mining sites, and communities across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp, and the Manso enclave.
The operation resulted in five arrests and the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of ammunition, and two vehicles. A key suspect linked to a previous 2025 bullion robbery in Offinso Abofour, Seidu Salifu (40), died during the operation.
In a separate operation near Agona Nkwanta, Western Region, five suspects were arrested for the robbery and murder of 40-year-old gold buyer Seth Kobina, with locally manufactured pistols, metal bars, and cutlasses retrieved.
Crackdown in Northern, Savannah, and Eastern Enclaves
The IGP highlighted several other successful operations across the country:
- Northern & Savannah Robbery Ring: Police in the Northern Region arrested three suspects—Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus, and Abdul Rahman Haruna—responsible for motorbikes and highway robberies, as well as the murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso.
- Buipe Cattle Market Mastermind: The alleged mastermind behind the June 29, 2026, Buipe Cattle Market robbery—which involved the theft of GH₵430,000—60-year-old Alhaji Imoro Beliko (alias Alhaji Yacouba), attempted to escape during a police surveillance operation on September 5, 2026, and died from gunshot wounds.
- Accra-Kumasi Highway Gang: Police arrested the leader of a highway robbery gang operating on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch, along with his biological mother, who concealed weapons in her home. Officers recovered a pump-action gun, multiple single- and double-barrel shotguns, cutlasses, pepper spray, and handcuffs.
- Assault Rifle Interceptions: Intelligence teams retrieved eight AK-47 assault rifles, one SMG rifle, and two foreign pistols, remanding five suspects who are set to appear in Accra Circuit Court on September 8, 2026.
Commitment to Sustained Operations
Expressing gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the government for equipping the service with operational vehicles and armored equipment, IGP Yohuno assured the public that the Police Service will remain relentless.
“Let me once again make it clear to all criminals out there: the Ghana Police Service under my leadership will sustain these operations,” IGP Yohuno warned. “No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you.”
