John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured that the next NDC administration will prioritise the protection of women.
He says his next government will put measures in place to safeguard the interest of women and protect the vulnerable as well.
Speaking at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the launch of the party’s Women’s Manifesto Monday, September 30, 2024, John Mahama said the Interstate Succession Law
The Interstate Succession Act PNDCL 111 states in part that;
(1) Where the intestate is survived by a spouse and by a child the residue of the estate shall devolve in the following manner: (a) three-sixteenth to the surviving spouse; (b) nine-sixteenth to the surviving child; (c) one-eighth to the surviving parent; (d) one-eighth in accordance with customary law.
It is meant to aid the sharing of the properties of a spouse who dies without a will. However, John Mahama says the law in its current form is not helping women and needs to be amended to protect them.
“By operationalizing the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, we will ensure that women hold at least 30% of political appointments.
“We will pass the Property Rights of Spouses Bill, the Domestic Workers Bill, and the Intestate Succession Amendment Bill, further solidifying women’s rights and protections,” he stated.
John Mahama also assured that a law will be passed to protect the vulnerable, especially house helps who are mostly females and are subjected to ill treatment from their bosses.
He also highlighted on the Women’s Development Bank the next NDC administration will establish to provide soft loans to women to expand their businesses irrespective of the size.
