Residents of Suame received the resignation of their Member of Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader with varying reactions.

To those who received the news with shock, their MP is an experienced politician as well as a long-serving lawmaker whose resignation they never expected especially in the lead up to a general election.

Onua Online’s engagement with some constituents brought out differing opinions with some saying the MP was pushed out with others seeing nothing wrong with his decision.

“It came as a shock to us because he is an experienced Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency and it is a big
blow to us,” a constituent indicated.

Others also think he was not treated fairly by the party and shouldn’t have resigned from the leadership role.

Some of the constituents also expressed different sentiments toward the legislator’s influence in terms of the development of the constituency.

Some held his resignation would not affect the constituency and the party as a whole since he has not derived any monumental development in the constituency with all his experience in politics.

They said Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation was a good initiative that needs to be emulated by other politicians who render a disservice to their constituents.

“It is good he has resigned from the leadership because he has done nothing in Kronum. Constituents of Kronum voted for him but not a single development happened here. So I am happy he has resigned. Someone was there before he came so I think that person too can do the work for the party and it won’t affect the party anyway,” a voter at Kronum expressed.

The long-serving Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency and Majority leader of the New Patriotic Party, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, resigned as Majority Leader in Parliament after a crucial between the Majority caucus and Jubilee House on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, to discuss the way forward for a brouhaha that emanated from a rumours of leadership changes that went viral on social media after it had been dropped as item 5 on a NEC meeting which took place two days earlier.

He has served in the ranks of the NPP parliamentary leadership for about 23 years.

During this period, he was Majority Leader for 15 years and two months, deputy leader for four years, and Chief Whip for four years.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu takes up the vital role of leading “Team Bawumia” to fashion out the NPP’s manifesto around the vision of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 elections.
