Nana Ofori Ahenkan II, Chief of Sefwi Bonzian and Krontihene of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, has urged the Western North Regional Minister to address growing indiscipline in the region’s forest reserves.
Speaking to the Minister at a courtesy call to him in his palace, Nana Ahenkan expressed deep concern over illegal activities that are rapidly degrading the forests. He revealed that many unauthorized individuals are engaging in illicit operations, which he described as “pathetic.”
The chief called on the minister to take swift action to protect the forests by ensuring that only those with legitimate permits are allowed to operate. He also emphasized the need for thorough verification of permits and documents to prevent fraud and illegal encroachment.
In addition to forest protection, Nana Ahenkan urged the minister to prioritize key infrastructural projects in the region.
He specifically appealed for the completion of the Bonzian and Juaboso town roads, which were under construction before the last elections. He also highlighted the deplorable state of the road from Benchemaa Barrier to Juaboso Nkwanta, calling on the government to take immediate action.
Furthermore, the chief reminded the minister of promises made by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang during a festival celebration at Sefwi Bonzian.
The Vice President had assured the community that, if elected, the government would develop the Bonzian Waterfall and upgrade Nana Ntaadu Senior High School into a public institution to support Juaboso Senior High School. Nana urged the minister to remind her of these commitments.
Minister’s response
In his response, Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum assured Nana Ahenkan that the government would take immediate steps to curb illegal activities in the forest.
He acknowledged that while some individuals have legitimate permits, illegal operations remain a serious challenge. He pledged to enforce stricter measures to ensure compliance with forestry laws.
The Minister also assured the chief that the region’s development concerns would be considered. He called on Nana Ahenkan to collaborate with him in addressing these challenges and reiterated that his doors were always opened for discussions and support.
