One hundred and sixty-one thick trees in two forest reserves of seven hectares, spanning from the Suaman Dadieso District to the Aowin Municipality in the Western North Region, have to be cut down to pave the way for the extension of electricity from Juaboso to the Aowin Municipality.

Currently, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has paid an amount of GH¢21,150 to the Forestry Commission in order for them to be able to cut these trees to pave the way for the extension.

The extension, when completed, will provide a 33KV power line, which will end the electricity drought in the Aowin Municipality since 1992.

Aowin, since 1992, has not had its own electricity power station.

Due to this, it relies on Asankragua and Elubo in the Western Region for electricity.

The erratic power supply became worse, so residents had no option but to hit the streets on Friday, April 24, 2026, to demonstrate against the ECG over their situation.

Reacting to the development on Onua TV’s Nsem Titire on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Municipal Chief executive, Stephen Morcher, explained that “currently, there is load on the Asankragua sub-station, so we receive power from only Elubo”.

He said, “We can’t build a sub-station with a common fund, so we will rely on the central government for such a project because it needs millions of dollars.”

Mr Morcher said, “Juaboso station has given us one feed of which we have to erect high tension from Juaboso to Suaman Dadieso and then to Aowin, which will provide us with a sub-station.”

The MCE assured that by the end of the year 2026, the 33-kV power from Juaboso to Aowin will be completed to provide full electricity to the people of Aowin.

Solar for Enchi

The MCE added that currently, all the major streets in Enchi, the capital of Aowin Municipality, are being given solar street lights to boost security.

Mr Morcher noted that even if the lights go off at night, the solar lights will provide light in the community.

“This problem has been there since 1992, so it is not the National Democratic Congress government that came to create it. It has been a major challenge for the people of Aowin,” he explained.
