An 18-year-old herdsman, Umaru Abdulai, has been arrested by the Gomoa Dominase District Police Command for allegedly stealing 20 cows worth GHC200,000.00 at Gomoa Dominase Onion Market in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
Police sources say the suspect and his accomplices have stolen over 20 cows from different people at Gomoa Dominase and its enclave.
Reports indicate they sell the cows to butchers at Awutu Bawjiase and use part of the proceeds to restock their kraal from the Northern region.
The suspect and his father have over 1,000 cattle but none of them have been stolen according to a victim.
One of the victims, Umar Inusah, who spoke with Onua News’ Nana Yaw Asare, noted that the suspects always come to the market at day time to spy on their cattle to identify the big ones and steal them.
He says one farmer who observed their operations informed a police officer in his house and got the 18-year-old arrested, with the others taking on their heels.
“When they steal them, they sell them and use the money to buy some and add to theirs. They have over 1000 cattle. We wouldn’t know had it not been this policeman and the farmer. The Fulani herdsmen are really worrying us. Even if you buy a sheep and they see that they are nice, they will come and steal.
“Sometimes you see them going round and you might think they are here to trade not knowing they come to steal us. They have taken five of my own. They come and select the big ones. This Alhaji’s own, they have stolen 7, there is a prison officer, they have taken 8 of his. We know they have been stealing but if you don’t catch them, how would you accuse them?
“The farmer questioned why they always bring cattle to the very place they take them to before selling them. He said the place is not a market but these people always bring cattle here. So he informed the police officer in his house,” he narrated.
Meanwhile, the farmers are calling on the government to get rid of the herdsmen from the Dominase Onion market else they will take the law into their hands.
