Twenty personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have graduated from the Army Special Operations Forces Basic Course Five, 2026, after nine months of intensive training aimed at strengthening their operational capabilities amid evolving security threats in West Africa.

The course was designed to develop the physical endurance, mental resilience, tactical proficiency and leadership skills required of personnel expected to operate in complex and demanding security environments.

The graduation marks the successful completion of a rigorous selection and training process that began in November 2025, when 87 personnel attempted the initial assessment and selection exercise. Only 30 candidates qualified to commence the course on January 12, 2026.

Following nine months of intensive instruction and practical exercises, 20 personnel successfully completed the programme. The graduating cohort comprises one officer and 19 soldiers.

Thirteen of the graduates are from the Army Special Operations Brigade, while the remaining seven were drawn from other units and training institutions within the Ghana Armed Forces.

The training exposed participants to a range of operational environments, including urban, rural, jungle, riverine and mountainous terrain, equipping them with the skills needed to function under varied and challenging conditions.

Their training covered navigation, fieldcraft, communications, weapons handling, mission planning, leadership, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and close-quarter battle.

The programme also placed emphasis on discipline, teamwork, adaptability and sound decision-making, which are essential for personnel operating in unpredictable environments.

The specialised competencies acquired are expected to enhance the Armed Forces’ capacity to undertake missions requiring advanced military skills and support broader national security objectives.

The Commander of the Army Special Operations Brigade, Brigadier General Richard Mensah, said the training was particularly important given the increasingly complex security situation in West Africa and the Sahel.

The sub-region continues to face security challenges associated with terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime, placing greater demands on military forces to strengthen their preparedness and develop specialised capabilities.

Special Operations Forces play a distinct role in supporting broader military operations through specialised skills, flexibility and the ability to operate in challenging conditions.

The successful completion of the course therefore represents another step in the Ghana Armed Forces’ efforts to develop personnel capable of responding to emerging threats and contributing to the protection of Ghana’s territorial integrity.

Brigadier General Mensah charged the graduates to uphold the warrior ethos of the Army Special Operations Brigade and maintain the highest standards of professionalism and discipline.

He urged them to continue improving their physical fitness, tactical proficiency and leadership skills, emphasising the need for continuous development even after completing the formal training programme.

The graduates are expected to apply the knowledge and competencies acquired in the course to their respective assignments while remaining committed to teamwork, operational excellence and the core values of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Their graduation highlights the importance of specialised military training in building a capable and adaptable force as Ghana continues to strengthen its preparedness against evolving security threats within the sub-region.
