The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. William Agyepong, has urged senior officers and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to remain proactive, professional, disciplined, and forward-looking in responding to emerging and complex security threats.
Speaking at this year’s Ghana Armed Forces General Headquarters retreat on March 23, the CDS emphasized that the ability to anticipate, adapt, and respond effectively to evolving security challenges is critical not only for operational success but also for sustaining the military’s relevance as a key pillar of national stability.
Lt. Gen. Agyepong further noted that the Armed Forces is expected to uphold these core values and ensure they are reflected in the conduct of its daily activities and operations.
He stressed that discipline and professionalism must remain the foundation upon which the credibility and effectiveness of the military are built.
The four-day retreat, which commenced on Monday, March 23, is designed to provide a platform for senior officers to deliberate, offer strategic advice, and provide guidance on the professional management and future direction of the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to the CDS, a central objective of the retreat is to revive and reinforce regimentation across all levels of the Armed Forces, ensuring uniform standards, cohesion, and operational efficiency.
He also called on senior officers to place greater emphasis on innovation and adaptability in the face of rapidly changing security dynamics.
“The security environment is increasingly shaped by technology, information dominance, and unconventional tactics. Our doctrine, training, planning processes, and learning approaches must evolve accordingly,” he stated.
The retreat has brought together key figures within the military hierarchy, including Service Chiefs, Chief of Staff, General Officers Commanding (GOCs), Directors, and other senior officers, all tasked with shaping policies and strategies to strengthen the operational readiness and institutional capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The annual retreat forms part of ongoing efforts by the Military High Command to assess performance, address emerging threats, and align strategic priorities with national and global security trends.
