Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Dome Kwabenya, has been adjudged by the Electoral Commission (EC) as winner of the 2024 elections held in the constituency.
This makes it the first time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured the seat which has always been won by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The constituency was among nine disputed polities which ended in court following some misunderstanding amongst the factions of the two main contenders.
Initially, the EC had declared Madam Akurugu as winner of the contest, but was later rescinded. This followed the exclusion of results of some three polling stations which could not be added.
After three weeks of back and forth, amid litigation in court, the EC, has on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, declared Madam Akurugu winner of the race.
She obtained 50,967 votes, narrowly surpassing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr., who received 50,669 votes.
The seat was initially occupied by Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye, who became the Speaker of the 7th Parliament, before being taken by Sarah Adwoa Safo, a private legal practitioner who also held the seat for three terms.
Meanwhile, seven out of the nine disputed seats have been won by the NPP following a re-collation which was ordered by the High Court, with the NDC securing one out of the lot.
The High Court’s order which called for the re-collation in the constituencies have, however, been quashed by the Supreme Court.
