Asawase lawmaker, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, is confident the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will make great strides in the Ashanti region in the upcoming December elections.

He says the party is setting an ambitious goal to capture 32% of the votes in the region despite the area being a stronghold of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the NDC has performed within a percentage range of 28 and 29 in the past years, but has expressed high hopes of outperforming those figures in the upcoming exercise.

“We are targeting 32% of votes from the Ashanti Region, and we are confident that we will do better than in previous years. We believe we can cross the 30% mark, and we’re actively working on the ground to make that happen,” he said on Accra-based JoyNews Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

As part of the measures to attaining the feat, the former Minister of Youth and Sports indicated that the party assessed its strengths and weaknesses in the region to devise strategies that would help them achieve their goal.

He noted that leadership has planned on motivating their supporters to go out on the election day to vote and also prevent electoral malpractice from occurring.

“The party has implemented numerous structures aimed at protecting our votes, and our hope is that these efforts will be effective on election day. If all goes well, we might even exceed our target,” he added.

The governing NPP, has meanwhile, set a target of attaining 85% of the votes in the region. This was announced by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during his unveiling at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 09, 2024. But the opposition NDC has doubted the possibility of the ambition, saying it is never going to be possible.

However, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Adom Appiah, has doubted the projected figure of the NDC in the Ashanti region.

He says “It is impossible for the NDC to get that figure” in the region which is their stronghold.
