The Acting Chief Executive of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has said the 2025 Budget has restored the previously eroded public trust in politicians.
He says the leadership style exhibited by the Akufo-Addo administration made many youth lose hope and trust in politicians and democracy as a whole.
However, with the fulfillment of the promises made by President Mahama to Ghanaians as contained in the budget, Sammy Gyamfi says it has renewed the hope of the youth and rebuilt their trust in the political class.
According to him, the fiscal policy of the government presented by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, lived to the hopes and aspirations of the people.
In an exclusive interview on the BigIssue on TV3 Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said Mahama has charted a course for the citizenry to have hope in Ghana’s democracy.
“I’ve realised that indeed the political class can be trusted. Indeed they can continue to believe in the Ghana project. They can continue to believe in hope again. In the last 8 years under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government, one commodity that was very scarce was the commodity of trust in public leadership and hope. People lost hope in the political class. We saw unprecedented disillusionment in our young people.
“People gave up on Ghana, people ridiculed the political class, people lost interest in politics and elections and I think that probably accounted for the low turnout we witnessed in the 2020 elections. There were some who erroneously thought all politicians are the same.
“They lie their way into office for power only to flatter to deceive of their promises. Politicians don’t respect their social contract with the people. But yesterday, H.E. John Dramani Mahama demonstrated to that all politicians are not the same and that there are still men of integrity in politics,” he stated.
Scores of Ghanaians are expecting the NDC administration to live to its reset mantra following what many have described as the shambolic performance of the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration leading to its humiliating defeat in the December 2024 elections.
The budget, as delivered by the Minister, proposes abolishing nuisance taxes introduced and retained by the last administration, subject to parliamentary approval.
The budget’s implementation is expected to bring relief to businesses and citizens through tax cuts, which many believe contributed to the economic downturn under the previous administration.
