Statesman and founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has said the decision on whether Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can lead the NPP to victory in 2028 rests with Ghanaians and not him.
Responding to a question on whether he thinks Dr Bawumia will be the game-changer for the party in the next election, the veteran politician was measured in his response.
“That one will be decided by the people not me. It’s the people who decide who runs this country not me,” he stated.
Speaking on the state of the NPP with JB, host of Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, in his house on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe explained that the Ghanaian electorate had already decided against Dr Bawumia succeeding former President Akufo-Addo, a development he said he foresaw prior to the December 2024 polls.
“And it’s the people who decided that he shouldn’t be the President after Akufo-Addo and I saw that long and I told them. I saw that coming and I told them. It’s on record. I’m not just talking loosely,” he stressed.
He argued that in any civilised democratic country, the signs of a party winning an election are visible, recalling his earlier prediction on the NPP’s ‘break the 8’ agenda.
“I said it and I have the recording that if the Electoral Commissioner then will do the right thing, my party can never ‘break the 8’ and it happened,” he said.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe further dismissed suggestions that his criticisms are motivated by support for the opposition National Democratic Congress, insisting he criticises them equally just as he does to his own party.
“Not because I’m NDC, what can NDC do for me? I criticise them equally. Since John Mahama came to power, I’ve not seen him with my eyes,” he noted, reiterating his stance that whoever becomes President lies with Ghanaians and not any individual. “So it’s the people of this country,” he added.
