Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of preparing to use misinformation and disinformation as a political strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a statement on Facebook, September 15, the Effutu MP alleged that the NDC government would seek to divert public attention from what he described as its failure to deliver on important national issues through misinformation and disinformation.
He said the strategy was not new, arguing that the NDC had allegedly relied on similar tactics while in opposition.
“Going into the 2028 elections, one strategy the NDC Government is likely to use aggressively, in its desperation to hold on to power, is misinformation and disinformation,” he said.
“Expect FAKE NEWS and manufactured distractions aimed at taking attention away from the important national issues on which the Government has failed to deliver.
“This is not new, it is a political tool they have mastered,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and critically assess information circulated in the run-up to the elections.
He particularly called on NPP members, party officers and communicators to verify claims, expose what they consider false information and avoid allowing propaganda to determine the party’s political agenda.
“We must stay vigilant, question what we are told and refuse to be distracted from the issues that affect us.
“NPP members, officers and communicators especially carry an even greater responsibility. We must remain alert, disciplined and focused.
“Check the facts, expose the lies quickly and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda,” he wrote on Facebook.
According to him, the NPP must instead keep public attention on the government’s promises and the challenges confronting citizens.
He further urged party members to promote the vision of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.
“Keep the focus on the Government’s broken promises and the everyday problems Ghanaians face,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin concluded with a call for the party to maintain a clear message ahead of the polls.
“Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028.”
