The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has confirmed that a total of $3,070,067.81 was spent on the Black Stars at the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations.

The expenditure was out of a total of $8,506,450 budgeted for pre-tournament preparations up till the team reached the final.

But an initial $5,071,840.36 was released to the Ministry of Youth and Sports by the Ministry of Finance.

“This resulted in a surplus of $2,177,072.55 after our early exit from the tournament,” the Sports Minister said.

Mr Mustapha Ussif was giving account of the expenditure of the Black Stars to Parliament in response to a statement filed on the floor.

This comes after the disappointing run of the Black Stars at the 34th AFCON.

Ghana exited the tournament in the group stage.

The Black Stars, who have won the tournament four times in the past, post 1-2 to Cape Verde in their first Group B match before drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique.

The Sports Minister intimated that bonuses were planned to be paid the players should they have qualified to the next stage.

“Mr Speaker, the Ministry had negotiated to pay bonuses should the team progres to the next round of the tournament,” he said.

“Therefore, no qualification bonuses were paid due to the team’s early exit at the group stage.”
