8 persons have been severely injured in an accident that occured on the Winneba – Mankesim highway.

A passenger van fully loaded with people crashed into a tree after bursting one of its tyres and the steering wheel getting stuck.

The Toyota Hiace passenger van with registration number GR 5861-21 was fully loaded with passengers.

The impact of the crash was so severe that all seats of the vehicle got displaced and the passengers sustaining various degree of injuries.

The driver explained what actually ensued..

“I loaded from Kasoa to Ajumako and my steer locked after the tyre bursted,” he noted.

Out of the 15 passengers, 8 are in critical conditions with fractures in their upper and lower limbs.

The rest also sustained various degree of injuries.

DOI Adolf Ankomah Nuamah is the Apam Fire Ccommander, he expressed worry about the rampant accidents recorded at that particular spot.

Whilst admonishing drivers to drive with caution, he has also called on the Highway Authority to put in place speed reduction mechanisms.

“15 people were in the car. They all got injured but 8 were very serious. The eyewitness told us the driver was overspeeding but he told us he tyre got bursted and had a locked steer. We’ll plead with the authorities to get some speed ramps there because just last week there was an accident there,” he indicated.

All victims are currently receiving treatment at the St Luke Catholic Hospital at Apam.
