Government’s advisor on health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, has disclosed that the regional hospitals in Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111 project has stalled due to the debt restructuring the government is undertaking.
He says only one out of the seven is currently running due to the debt restructuring.
He explains value for money has been completed, awaiting the Finance Ministry’s approval after the debt restructuring for the contractors to return to site.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare has been telling Keminni Amanor on Hot Issues on TV3 Sunday, June 09, 2024, that once the programme is over, the contractors would finish up negotiations and return to site.
“You realise that we didn’t start all the 111 at the same time. For example, the regional hospitals, as we speak now, the seven of them, it is only one which is running because Ministry of Health has a project for… the Takoradi one. The rest are on hold. We’ve done the value for money, it’s at Ministry of Finance, because of the debt restructuring and IMF so immediately we end the debt restructuring which I know that it’s going to be this month ending, the contractors would then complete the negotiations and then go to site,” he stated.
About Agenda 111
The Agenda 111 initiative, inaugurated by President Akufo-Addo on August 17, 2021, aims to among other things, construct a total of 111 district hospitals throughout the country to improve access to healthcare.
Most of the facilities are targeted at improving healthcare in rural areas. The project is expected to be completed by 2025, coinciding with the end of President Akufo-Addo’s second term.
As of October 2023, the government had announced that over 89 hospitals have reached an average of 52% completion.
Meanwhile, with barely seven months to the end of the President’s term of office, not even 15 of the 111 hospitals have been fully completed.
