The medical supplies which have been locked-up at the Tema Port do not contain HIV or Tuberculosis drugs, the Ministry of Health has clarified.
The Global Fund containers, according to the sector ministry, are rather containing mosquito nets.
This clarification comes on the back of concerns raised by a section of the public, specifically civil society organisations that are health-focused, on the threats of the development leading to a possible suspension of funding and donations to the state if the locked-up supplies are not cleared from the harbour.
Isaac Offei Baah, the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health, amid concerns that the drugs are rotting at the port noted that the contents of the containers are mosquito nets and not drugs for TB and HIV.
He said the HIV medications were cleared in April, assuring the public that the Ministry is doing all it can to clear the supplies to ensure they are put to good use.
“I want to put it on record that we have mosquito nets and we don’t have anything like HIV drugs or TB drugs [locked up at the port].
“Once it is something that has been given to the people of Ghana, we are working towards making it out and putting it to good use.
“So for clarity sake, we don’t have any HIV drugs locked up at the port that we have not cleared. All those ones were cleared somewhere last April,” Mr. Baah told Accra-based Starr FM.
