Ghana’s economy has defeated the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the Head of the Economic Management Team (EMT), Isaac Adongo, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, has said.

Mr. Adongo says it is for that reason that the Vice President has fled from issues relating to the economy.

His comments come on the back of the Finance Minister’s statement that the economy is now on the path of recovery, saying the opposition cannot campaign with it.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with the IMF Monday, July 01, 2024, on the economy and the second review of the IMF-supported programme, Dr. Adam expressed confidence in the country’s economic trajectory.

“I am confident that our economy is certainly on the path of sustained recovery, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity for all Ghanaians,” Dr. Adam stated.

The Minister highlighted several key developments in June 2024 that underscore this progress. These include reaching agreements on debt restructuring with both the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) and Eurobond holders, as well as the IMF Executive Board’s approval of the second review of Ghana’s programme implementation.

Reacting to the statement on Accra-based JoyNews Wednesday, July 03, 2024, the legislator questioned the last time the Vice President spoke on the economy.

He said it is because Dr. Bawumia has been overwhelmed by the state of the economy, telling the Finance Minister not to throw dust in the eyes of the public.

“His boss himself, having realised that, has run away from the economy. Dr. Bawumia has run away from the economy. When was the last time you heard him talking about the economy? Because the economy has given him a better beating now. If you are somebody who talks too much and brags, the economy will deal with you,” he said on Accra-based JoyNews.

Commenting on the Vice President’s quest for power to fix the economy holistically, Mr. Adongo noted that the assertion alone affirms the failure of the NPP administration.

“What’s his record? He tells us that they’ve messed up and he will come and clean the mess. It means that you have failed as a government. You now think that we can isolate you from the government and give you power to come and do something better than your government?” he quizzed

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central also criticised the government for heading to the Bretton Wood Institution for a bailout having touted itself as a proud government, and describing a support from the IMF as a sign of incompetence.

“It is unfortunate the government of the NPP led by the head of the Economic Management Team is today trying to tell Ghanaian that there is something positive from the IMF. The IMF they said was a sign of incompetence, they would never go there, that they are a proud people, today they are telling us that we should have hope because of IMF.
