After the John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration almost 16 years ago, the next person of Asante descent who has come closer to the presidency is Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
This follows his nomination and confirmation by the National Executive Council of the New Patriotic Party to partner its flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 presidential election.
The ticket, which was unveiled at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi Tuesday, July 09, 2024, according to Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, is not fit for purpose.
According to the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, there are more competent people from the region who could have been chosen to pair the Vice President, rather than the Energy Minister who has been widely tagged as an arrogant person.
Speaking with Captain Smart on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Mr. Adongo questioned the NPP if NAPO is the only choice they could offer Ghanaians after John Kufuor.
“Otumfuo couldn’t wholeheartedly support NAPO and all his comments were red flags. In less than 2 hours after the advise at Manhyia, he went overboard [at the Jubilee Park]. Is this all the Ashanti Region could offer Ghana after giving us Kufuor? You should have rather apologised to the butterfly to come home,” he quizzed.
Prior to his unveiling at the Jubilee Park, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Nana Poku (NAPO) who is a royal from Manhyia, was officially introduced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who advised him over the arrogance tag on him.
According to the Asantehene, he doesn’t know NAPO to be arrogant growing up. However, due to comments from the public tagging him as an arrogant person, he doesn’t want the assertion to be affirmed.
Few hours after the Asantehene’s advice, NAPO went to the Jubilee Park to pass comments which many have described as an affirmation of the arrogance tag on him.
The posture and tonation of the Manhyia South lawmaker, according to the political communication specialist, Prof. Kobby Mensah, proved his critics right with the arrogance tag on him.
“I can boldly say that if the history of Ghana is told from 1957, we have never had a president that has helped Ghana more than Nana Akufo-Addo. I mean from 1957, even including your Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected Ghana and developed the country more than Nana Akufo-Addo,” NAPO had said in Twi.
