Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has expressed the need for their party to secure majority membership for the next Parliament considering how the current numbers has stifled government business.
The legislator has highlighted the need to work towards some seats the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost in the 2020 elections to ensure they secure majority in the upcoming polls.
Speaking to TV3’s Eric Mawuena Egbeta at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi Sunday, August 18, 2024, where the NPP will be launching its Manifesto, the private legal practitioner indicated that they are putting their armour together to win the battle on December 07.
He stated that an NPP victory in the upcoming polls will be better for Ghana.
When asked what the party has in place to ensure they maintain the majority in Parliament especially when he will not be in Parliament himself, he noted the current trend of events has shown the NPP how important it is to be have majority.
“It is critical having regard to what is happening in Parliament now. This is unparliamentary, that the NDC will not look at the rational proposition coming from NPP but they just want to use numbers to have their way so it is imperative that if you do not have the majority in Parliament, government programmes can be undermined. So we are on the grounds.
“We believe that some areas we lost, we will recover and then when it tips into the majority, and we have the presidency, it will be better for Ghana,” he stated.
He added that the NDC is bereft of ideas, having battled power rationing ‘dumsor’ for almost four years without seeking solution to it.
“But not have a situation in which some people are in opposition and they are in opposition for its sake. If you ask them where are your ideas to change this situation, you were embarrassed by ‘dumsor‘, you couldn’t do it, the man is saying that he is ready to tip into the energy space, solar, because we are a tropical nation,” he stated, adding that Bawumia is the man with the knowledge to salvage the situation.
“So the man who has the ideas and the man who is criticising his neighbour for criticism sake, who should be given the space to rule Ghana?” he quizzed.
Thousands of supporters of the governing NPP are expected to gather at GSTS today for the launch of the party’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 election.
The event, billed to commence at 2:00pm, follows the party’s mammoth health walk in the Western Regional capital of Sekondi-Takoradi yesterday, Saturday, August 17.
In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong Monday, August 05, 2024, he stated that an eleven-member committee had been set up to plan and execute the launch.
Madam Oboshie Sai-Coffie chairs the committee, with Abena Asante serving as Secretary.
