President Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the Silver Jubilee Building at the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The new three-storey structure, featuring lecture halls and office spaces, embodies the President’s 2018 pledge during UDS’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. At the inauguration, President Akufo-Addo expressed his satisfaction with the building’s completion, highlighting its symbolic importance beyond its physical presence.
“This building represents our collective vision for a brighter future, our dedication to knowledge, and our commitment to national development,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
He emphasized that the facility would serve as a catalyst for innovation and intellectual engagement, enriching the academic environment for UDS students and faculty.
The President extended his gratitude to everyone involved in the project, including the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the university’s Governing Council, faculty, staff, students, and the contractors, Buildex Company Ltd. He commended their dedication and craftsmanship, evident throughout the building.
During his speech, President Akufo-Addo underscored the pivotal role of education in national development. He noted the substantial investments his government has made in education, including a GH¢12.88 billion budgetary allocation aimed at transforming the sector.
“My government has invested heavily in education because we believe it is the most powerful tool for national transformation,” he said.
The President also highlighted the success of the ‘No Guarantor Policy,’ which has improved access to tertiary education by eliminating financial barriers. This policy has resulted in a 60.3% increase in tertiary education enrollment between the 2016/2017 and 2022/2023 academic years. In response to this increased demand, the government has established four new universities and expanded existing institutions.
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his government’s commitment to research and academia, revealing that GH¢226 million has been allocated for research allowances since 2020, with an additional GH¢491 million for book allowances. These investments, he noted, are vital for fostering scholarly inquiry and innovation.
Looking forward, President Akufo-Addo urged university authorities to strengthen collaborations with industry, government, and communities to align research and teaching with national development goals. He stressed the critical role universities play in training professionals across various fields.
The President encouraged support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming presidential election, praising his competence and vision for Ghana’s future.
