Until the militia groups in the country are disbanded, the signing of a peace pact will be a waste of time, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has indicated.
The actions of militias, according to the ex-military officer, have never been beneficial to any nation, calling for an urgent need for such groups to be disbanded.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Thursday, November 28, 2024, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned whether those responsible for these groups have been contacted to disarm them before the general elections.
The former President of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) comments come on the back of the Peace Pact that was signed by all the presidential candidates in the 2024 elections to ensure there is peace before, during and after the December 7 polls.
He was confident that the militias abound and until they are completely eradicated, the peace pact that was signed yesterday would not make any meaning.
“There is one thing a lot of us have forgotten. As I speak to you now, we have within the system, militias. What is going to be done about these militias? Have they been talked to? Have they been seen by the security agencies? Have they been seen even by those responsible for them to be disbanded? They are there. I’m talking about what I know is in play.
“If we are not going to put these militias out of function and we allow them to work in the interest of certain interest groups in even government organisations, then we are wasting our time.
“Militias all over the world that I have known since the time of Adolf Hitler, have never said anything good to the state nor the leader of that state. They have been destructive and they ended up always destroying the nation,” he stated.
All the presidential candidates in the 2024 elections met in Accra Thursday, November 28, 2024, to sign a peace pact.
The two leading candidates, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama for the National Democratic Congress were personally present to sign the peace pact ahead of the elections.
The 4th Peace Pact was under the auspices of the National Peace Council and the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG).
Also present at the event were the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, the National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, former ECOWAS President, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, as well as many other dignitaries.
The opposition National Democratic Congress earlier protested signing the pact until certain demands are met. Following the acquisition of those demands, the party participated in the process yesterday.
