The immediate past Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has asked President Mahama not to insist on his campaign promises if they won’t serve Ghana’s interest well.

Particularly on his decision to run a lean government by appointing 60 ministers, Mr. Appiah-Kubi says he can reverse it if he thinks the realities on the grounds require him to govern with more than that.

The former legislator was speaking on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, January 11, 2025, when he made the comments. He says Mahama made the promise as a presidential candidate, and can change his mind to do what is best for the state if he thinks the 60 ministers will not be appropriate.

“Let Mr. Mahama consider that campaign message as presidential candidate then. Now he is our President let him think presidential. If for any reason he thinks that Ghana cannot do with 60 ministers, let him do what is good for the country,” he advised.

The private legal practitioner cited former President Kufuor of making some utterances as a presidential candidate and coming out with the truth later when he became President and was dawned with the realities.

Although Appiah-Kubi expressed his support for a lean government since he says it will wean the state off some expenditure, he asked that Ghanaians don’t hold Mahama to his promise if it is going to be at Ghana’s detriment.

“I cited also President Kufuor, who before he became President, also gave out certain indices, he came to be a President and the realities dawned on him, that what he was talking about in his capacity as presidential candidate was different from what he was seeing in his seat as President.

“Indeed, bringing us a lean government is a policy that I admired and I respect but let us not hold him to it,” he stated.
