Chaos erupted in front of the residence of the former Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, when a court bailiff and three other persons were confronted by angry youth.

The court bailiff, Victor Akorli, had gone to the residence of the former Energy Minister in the company of three other individuals to execute a substituted service of an order by an Appeals Court in Koforidua in relation to the SALL case.

The team was also accompanied by two reporters from the Ghana News Agency and UTV.

The Ho Hight Court in July 2024, dismissed the SALL election petition brought to it by Prof Margaret Kwaku and four others.

The petition which was challenging the validity of Mr Amewu’s election as Member of Parliament for Hohoe in 2020 was dismissed on grounds of lack of jurisdiction.

Dissatisfied with the court’s decision, the petitioners proceeded to the Court of Appeal in Koforidua and secured an order of substituted service to be served on the former Energy Minister ahead of the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, March, 19, 2025.

The service according to court documents made available to OnuaOnline, were to be pasted on the Court of Appeal notice board, Koforidua, the High Court notice board, Hohoe, the High Court notice board, Ho and on the gates of the 2nd respondent’s (John Peter Amewu) residence in Hohoe.

But tension erupted when a court bailiff detailed by the Hohoe High Court went to the residence of the former Energy Minister to serve the order.

According to sources, while the bailiff was in the process of pasting the documents on the gate, the security guard at the gate made calls alerting some youth who drove to the scene to confront the bailiff, and the three other persons identified as George Ani Bansah, a former NDC Chairman for Hohoe, Dr Joe Addae (both of whom have represented the petitioners during proceedings in the Ho High Court) and one other individual only identified as a National Security operative.

In the heat of the moment, the unidentified National Security operative drew a side arm to scare the crowd in what appeared to be a mob attack on the team.

Sources at the court have confirmed the incident but indicated that the bailiff escaped unhurt.

Though initial reports suggested that the former MP’s house was raided by armed men, further checks have revealed otherwise with enough evidence confirming that the men were only at the gate to paste the court documents.
