Lawyer and Historian, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, has disclosed that Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, had intentions of naming the Accra International Airport after Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of Ejisu.
He says Dr. Nkrumah, after learning of the queen’s role in fighting the colonial masters, decided to name the airport after her as an honour to her and Asantes.
According to him, it was only the Asantes that fought the white people about five times and winning about three of them, making them the people that deserved that honour of having the airport named after one of their heroines.
Speaking with Captain Smart on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Monday, March 10, 2025, as part of the Ghana Month series, he disclosed that it was some of the Asante chiefs who objected to the idea at the time.
He explains the then Asantehene, Otumfuo Prempeh Agyemang II, rallied the chiefs for the honour to be given to Nana Yaa Asantewaa, but the kinsmen objected and opted for Nkrumah to rather choose a woman from the CPP and name the Airport after her.
The lawyer, who is a leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), indicated that he read the facts from the Master’s degree thesis of the daughter of Offinsohene, Nana Wiafe Akenten III.
