The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has congratulated Signal Officer with the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain Festus Yeboah Asuamah, for his successful cycling from Accra to Kumasi.

The Authority, in a Facebook post Sunday, April 06, 2025, expressed optimism about the event creating the necessary awareness to drum home the message about cyclists safety and sustainable transportation.

“Congratulations to Capt. Festus Yeboah Asuamah for completing the 250-Kilometer cycling journey from Accra to Kumasi in memory of Akpene Adzo Ahadzie.

“Hopefully, the event will help raise awareness about cyclist safety and the need to promote sustainable transportation,” the message stated, expressing further condolences to the family of the deceased young lady in whose honour the event was organised.

“Once again, our condolences to the bereaved family.”

The 250-kilometer ‘Endurance Ride’ from Accra to Kumasi on Saturday, April 05, 2025, was to promote safe and susta inable cycling in Ghana.

The inspiration behind the initiative, according to Captain Asuamah, is a tragic incident involving one Akpene Adzo Ahadzie, a cycling enthusiast and final-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

Miss Ahadzie, a day to the defence of her mock thesis in 2024, lost her life in a cycling accident on campus.

Her thesis, which focused on repurposing the Pokuase Interchange for cyclist use, was never defended due to her untimely passing.

Prior to the Ride on Saturday, Captain Asuamah, appearing on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Thursday, April 02, 2025, underscored the need for drivers to acknowledged that the road they use are equally shared by cyclists and should be protected.

Captain Festus Yeboah Asuamah

“I’ve observed for sometime now that cycling accidents usually happen. So I want to create the awareness to help protect the safety of riders. Since there are no bicycle lanes on our roads, I want the drivers to know we share the roads with them,”  he stated.

He aims to raise awareness about the importance of sharing roads between drivers and cyclists, expressing confidence that, “a journey of a 1000 miles begin with a step” and with the effort he is put in to embark on this all important initiative, the aim will be achieved at the end of the day.
