In what many anticipated would be a tough battle, Kumasi Mayor nominee, Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi widely known as King Zuba faced little resistance during his confirmation on Thursday, April 10 securing his position with surprising ease.
Out of the 60 elected and appointed members of the assembly, 56 showed up to vote.
55 voted Yes and 1 voted against his confirmation. This translated into Zuba securing 98.2 percent of the ballots cast.
Now, the real challenge begins. The newly confirmed Mayor must tackle pressing issues plaguing the city—from poor sanitation to chronic congestion in the central business district and security related matters.
So, what strategies does the mayor have in place to address Kumasi’s growing challenges?
“Decongesting Kumasi is a top priority but we want to do things differently in a sustainable manner,” he said.
He further indicated that “if you’re currently selling on a pavement adjust yourself, if you’re in the middle of any dual carriage road especially within the CBD, please take steps and get out of the place because from Wednesday April 16, we will go out and make sure that we clear Kumasi of all the filth and congestion in the business district. This is not about politics but the transformation of Kumasi”.
Mr Ofori Boadi is hopeful that with the overwhelming support gotten from the assembly members, they will assist him to deliver.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene indicated his full support to the plans by the Mayor to develop the city.
“There is a lot of work to be done. Once the Chief Executive is in, I will now play a supervisory role and help coordinate to make sure that concerns about sanitation and congestion are addressed,” he said.
