Private legal practitioner, Martin Luther Kpebu, has expressed shock over William Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s failure to curb corruption during his tenure as President.
He wonders why Akufo-Addo, having prepared himself for the presidency for over four decades and touting himself as highly competent, still performed poorly in office.
According to Kpebu, Akufo-Addo’s failure to surpass his immediate predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, in the fight against corruption, makes him an apology of a President in terms of fighting corruption.
Speaking on the KeyPoints show on TV3 Saturday, June 14, 2025, the renowned lawyer explained that he was still shocked as to how Akufo-Addo’s best performance on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) was still Mahama’s worst.
“When he came people said this is a man who has been preparing for the job for 40 years. Now we’ve seen real leadership. Real leadership…and see what we got. I’m still in shock. You prepared for over 40 years to become President, took on every President, even including Kufuor,” he said.
He stated that Akufo-Addo had led everyone to believe he was the best person to lead the country compared to any other President since the late 1970s, but proved to be the worst among them.
“Everybody from the late 70s was not good enough except he Akufo-Addo. Then you take office, your immediate predecessor, his fight for corruption, you couldn’t even beat him for one year. You couldn’t even beat JM for one year,” he added.

President Mahama recorded 47 on the CPI in 2015 before dropping to 43 in 2016 and left office. But despite being touted as an anti-corruption crusader and a man with zero tolerance for corruption, his best score for his entire 8 years in office, was Mahama’s worst, as indicated in the table above.
